They emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and lived in Kinmount one year. They then moved west to New Iceland and settled in Gimli. Benedikt took land in the Víðirnes Settlement, naming the farm Velli, where the family lived four years. In 1881 the family moved to Kjalvík in the same settlement, but Skapti, Benedikt’s brother moved to the Argyle Settlement.
