Björn was the son of Jóhann Vilhjálmur Árnason and Guðrún Björg Björnsdóttir in Gimli. He went to school there, but at a young age he began working as a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg. He then worked in the mines in Ontario. In 1945 he founded a retail company, Tip Top Market, with his brother Jóhann in Gimli. Jónína was the daughter of Jóhannes Kristmundsson and Jónasína Guðmundsdóttir in Manitoba.
