Edward’s parents were Vilhelm Georg Theodor Bernhöft and Johanne Louise Bertelsen. During his teenage years in Reykjavík, Edward worked various jobs and was then sent to Copenhagen to attend trade school. In 1890 he went to Canada and first settled near Glenboro, Manitoba, but a year later went south to Hallson, N. Dakota. There he met and married Sigurbjörg. He worked as a transporter but then bought land near Hensel and lived there for the rest of his life.
