Eygerður was the daughter of Jón Gíslason, a farmer in Hallson, and Halldóra Jósefsdóttir, who came west from Akranes in 1888. She attended trade school in Grand Forks and then worked in accounting and shorthand. Ólafur was the son of Edward L A Bernhöft and Sigurbjörg S Ólafsdóttir in N. Dakota. After completing elementary school, Ólafur went to trade school in Grand Forks but later studied hairdressing. For three years he did accounting for Björn Þorvaldsson, who ran a car dealership in Cavalier, N. Dakota. Then he took a job with the postal service in the Icelandic settlement in N. Dakota for almost 30 years.
