They emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and spent the first year in Gimli in New Iceland. They took land in the Víðirnes Settlement and named it Grund. They moved to the Thingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota in 1880. Traveling with them across the sea was Jóhannes Oddsson, Guðfinna’s father.
