Halldór emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1891. For the first few years, he worked for farmers in New Iceland and the Argyle Settlement. He then started transporting fish from northern Lake Winnipeg to Selkirk and Winnipeg. In 1895 he took land in the Víðirnes Settlement and called his farm Hjarðarhaga and lived there.
