Gunnlaugur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with his father, brother-in-law, and sister. They moved to the Pembina settlement. Gunnlaugur and Halldóra moved in 1903 to the Vallar settlement in Saskatchewan and took land. They moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1912 and bought land east of Wynyard. They lived there a long time, but as the years passed, they sold the land and moved to Wynyard.
