Hallgrímur came west with his parents in 1883 to Hallson, N. Dakota. The family lived there for ten years before moving to Roseau, Minnesota in 1893. They were there until 1903 but then moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and there Hallgrímur took land near the town of Leslie. He became a shopkeeper and ran a hardware store.
