Hannes Jakobsson Líndal was born in Húnavatnssýsla on August 17, 1884.
Spouse: March 20, 1918 Sigrún Ingibjörg Gunnlaugsdóttir b. in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland on May 5, 1892, d. in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 1963.

Hannes was the son of Jakob Líndal Hansson and Anna Hannesdóttir. Jakob came west in 1887 and Anna came a year later with their four children. They lived in various places in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Hannes worked in house sales in Winnipeg from 1904 to 1908. Then he moved west to Leslie in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan where he ran a hardware and lumber store for two years. He returned to Winnipeg where he founded the grain sales company Columbia Grain Co. Ltd. Shortly afterwards he joined forces with Pétur Anderson and they changed the name of the company to North West Commission Co. Ltd. They ran it for a long time. Later Hannes bought a house in California and moved there with his family.
