Helga Tómasdóttir was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on January 3, 1872. She died on July 16, 1964 in New Iceland.

Helga came west to Manitoba in 1876 with her parents, Tómas Jónasson and Guðrún Jóhannesdóttir; they settled in New Iceland. Þorvaldur came west alone to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876. He soon moved to New Iceland but stayed there just a short time because he got a job east of Selkirk with railway construction. From there he headed north to Mikley in 1878 and in 1881 he settled by the Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót). He lived in the Fljóts settlement the rest of his life.
