Ingvar Haukur Stefánsson was born in Vopnafjörður in N. Múlasýsla on June 3, 1901. He died in Iceland on March 28, 1953.

Ingvar came west to Canada in 1903 with his mother, Anna Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir, and her sister Jóna. They lived in Winnipeg until 1908, then moved with Anna’s husband, Sigbjörn Sigbjörnsson, to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Ingar attended the Winnipeg School of Arts from 1922 to 1925 and continued his studies in Chicago for three years. He moved all the way home to Iceland in 1932 and after that lived in Akureyri. He worked as a house painter for a while but then devoted himself to art. He decorated the churches at Munkaþverá, Möðruvellir in Eyjafjörður, and Mælifell in Skagafjörður. Ásta worked as a nurse and worked in Scotland, Winnipeg, Los Angeles and New York. She moved home to Iceland in 1932.
