Jóhann’s parents were Jóhann Vilhjálmur Árnason and Guðrún B Björnsdóttir in Gimli. Elín Sigurrós was the daughter of Elis Gladstone Anderson and Gjafrós Katrín Árnadóttir. Gjafrós’ parents were Árni Kristjánsson and Jónína Sigurrós Jónsdóttir in Winnipeg. Jóhann completed high school in Gimli and became a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg. He joined the navy and served on the warship Digby, which guarded cargo and passenger ships in the Atlantic during World War II. He settled in Gimli and in 1945 he founded a trading company there with his brother Bjorn.
