Jóhann Tryggvi Friðriksson was born in 1856 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla.

Jóhann came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 with his father and younger brother. They first lived in Ontario, moved to Lockport, Nova Scotia and from there went to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jóhann moved again and took land in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1882. He moved again, this time to the Argyle Settlement in 1884 and lived there until 1906. Then he went west to the Vatnabyggð Settlement in Saskatchewan where he looked over the land and settled in the Kandahar/Dafoe Settlement. Jóhann and Jónína lived there eleven years before selling the land and moving to Wynyard.
