Jón Jónsson was born in 1834 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. He died in N. Dakota in 1909.

They emigrated to America in 1873 and went directly to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They went west to Stoughton and lived there for a year. While there, Jón worked with the Norwegian famers. They moved to the Icelandic community in Shawano County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1874 and lived there until 1880. They went west to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota and settled there. Jón’s son took over the farming and the land in 1886. They were the step-parents of Stephan G. Stephansson, poet.
