Jón came west as a widower in 1903 with seven of his children. Hallgrímur had come west with his sister Sigríður in 1900. Jón spent the first winter in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He later took land in the Sandilands Settlement in 1904 but moved a year later and took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in the Kandahar/Dafoe area.

This photo was taked in the west on October 21, 1903. Jón had just arrived west with 7 of his children. Hallgrímur and Sigríður had come to Winnipeg in 1900. At the back are Áslaug, Hallgrímur and Baldur. The middle row consists of Hermann, Sigríður, Helgi, Jón from Mýri, Nanna and Ásrún. Missing is Haraldur.
