Jónas came west in 1882 with his parents, Sigfús Jónasson Bergmann and Þórunn Jónsdóttir, and siblings. They moved to Manitoba. Jónas took land in the Brown Settlement in 1899. His brother-in-law, Árni Hallgrímsson, had moved west to the Pacific Ocean with Jónas’ sister in 1895 where they had lived for two years. When they returned to Manitoba, Jonas invited them to settle on his land, and they did so. Jónas worked his land during the summer but lived in the village of Garðar, N. Dakota during the winter. He sold his land to Árni and lived in Garðar for the rest of his life.
