Jónína came west with her parents, Guðni Jónsson and Jakobína Sigurðardóttir in 1888. They settled in the Argyle settlement in Manitoba but died there a few years later. Jónína grew up in Baldur and lived there for some time. Haraldur was the son of Davíð Jónasson and Ragnhildur Friðrika Jónsdóttir, who likewise came west to Manitoba in 1888 and lived in Winnipeg. After military service in 1916-1919, Haraldur became a house painter in Baldur.
