Júlíus Jóhannsson was born in Grenivík in Eyjafjarðarsýsla July 9, 1875. Died November 12, 1957 in New Iceland. Used the surname Sigurður in Canada.

In 1878 Júlíus emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Jóhann Sigurðsson and Jóhanna Jonatansdóttir, and brothers and sisters. He grew up in Winnipeg and Selkirk, but at only 13 years of age he began work on Lake Winnipeg. He was employed on a fishing boat and later on freighting boats. He homesteaded in Icelandic River Settlement and called his place Grenivík where he lived for almost 50 years.
