Karl Jónsson was born in N. Múlasýsla on February 14, 1874. He died in Gimli on January 17, 1966. He took the last name Vopni in the west.

Karl came west to Manitoba in 1893 and worked with his brother Jón as a housebuilder. Þorbjörg was the daughter of Eirík Jónsson and Vilborg Stefánsdóttir who settled in Minnesota. They moved north to Arborg in 1901. Karl and Þorbjörg lived in Winnipeg until 1919 when they moved to Kenville, Manitoba, but in 1923, they settled on land a short distance from Arborg.
