Sigurður Konráð Steingrímsson was born in Selkirk, Manitoba on August 25, 1907.

Sigurður Konráð was the son of Steingrímur Sigurðsson and Elísabet Jónsdóttir, who came west to Manitoba in 1900. They first lived in Selkirk but in 1909, they moved to the Víðir settlement in New Iceland. Sigurður Konráð grew up there and became a farmer. Kristjana’s parents were Kristján Jakob Jónasson and Steinunn Gísladóttir, early settlers in Manitoba. Kristjana participated in the social affairs of her countrymen in the Víðir settlement, sitting on the board of the Ísafold women’s association there for years.
