Guðvaldur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 and went onward the same year to N. Dakota with his wife and six of their children. Their eldest child, Sigríður, came west with her spouse and children in 1903. Guðvaldur’s daughter, Björg, and her mother Agnes came west a year later. Guðvaldur took land in the Akra Settlement south of the Tongue River (Tunguá). He sold it in 1899 and moved to Roseau, Minnesota. In the spring of 1907, Guðlaugur sold everything in Roseau and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, lived there a short time, then in the summer, he moved onto land in the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan.
