Kristján and Svanfríður came west to Winnipeg in 1878 and went directly to New Iceland. In 1879, life’s road led them to the Pembina Settlement where Kristján homesteaded about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the village of Pembina. They then moved to Mountain and homesteaded south of the village in 1883.
