Lárus was the son of Jóhannes Sigurðsson, a merchant in Hnausa, Manitoba, and Þorbjörg Jónsdóttir. Lárus completed his primary education there and went to Winnipeg to study medicine. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1927 and continued his studies at Stanford University in California, where he graduated with an M.A. degree.
