Lillian was the daughter of Kári Stefánsson and Anna Mýrdal in Lundar. There she completed her primary education, went to Winnipeg for postgraduate studies and completed a B. Sc. degree in Home Economics at the University of Manitoba. Then she took up teaching, teaching for six years in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Jónas was the son of Rev. Eyjólfur Jónsson, a pastor in New Iceland, and his wife Ólafía Jónína Jónsdóttir Jónasson, a merchant in Gimli. Jónas studied at the University of Manitoba but then became a carpenter and worked in Huntington, British Columbia, where they lived.
