Magnús Benjamínsson was born in N. Múlasýsla on April 19, 1875. He died in Washington State in 1963. He took the name Michael Norland in the west.

Magnús came west to Minnesota with his parents, Benjamín Þorgrímsson and Gunnhildur Magnúsdóttir, in 1879. In the same year, Anna emigrated with her parents, Jósef Arngrímsson and Kristín Jónsdóttir, to Minnesota. Magnús and Anna grew up in the Icelandic community in the southwestern part of the state. In 1900, Magnús began farming in Lincoln County, but in 1910, the newlyweds moved to N. Dakota and farmed for many years in McLean County. Magnús later moved to Underwood, N. Dakota and ended up in Seattle, Washington.
