Sigmundur was the son of Jósef Sigurðsson and Arnbjörg Jónsdóttir at Melstað in New Iceland. Margrét’s parents were Stefán Sigurðsson and his second wife, Guðrún Magnúsdóttir. She came west with her widowed mother, Vigdís Guðmundsdóttir, who lived at Auðnir at Vatnsleysuströnd in Gullbringusýsla. Sigmundur was a fisherman on Lake Winnipeg and was also a carpenter in Gimli.
