Áskell came west in 1878 with his parents, Jón Brandsson and Margrét Guðbrandsdóttir, who settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Oddny was the daughter of Guðmundur Hjálmarsson and Sigurlaug Guðmundsdóttir of Skagafjörður who came west in 1887. Áskell and Oddný moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1903 and took land in the Elfros Settlement and lived there until 1911. Life’s road then led them to Montana where they lived until 1922. The next move was west to the Pacific where they took land near Blaine, Washington and lived the rest of their days.
