Ólafur was the son of Edward L A Bernhöft and Sigurbjörg S Ólafsdóttir in N. Dakota. After completing elementary school, Ólafur went to a trade school in Grand Forks but later studied hairdressing. For three years he did accounting for Björn Þorvaldsson, who ran a car dealership in Cavalier, N. Dakota. Then he took a job with the postal service in the Icelandic settlement in N. Dakota for almost 30 years. Eygerður was the daughter of Jón Gíslason, a farmer in Hallson, and Halldóra Jósefsdóttir, who came west from Akranes in 1888. Eygerður attended trade school in Grand Forks and then worked in accounting and shorthand.
