Ólafur Ólafsson was born in Mjóafjörður in S. Múlasýsla on September 14, 1899. He had the last name Anderson in the west.

Ólafur’s parents were Ólafur Árnason and Sólrún Árnadóttir both of Mjóafjörður. He came west across the sea with them and his siblings in 1903, just 3 years old. The family settled in New Iceland the same year and there Ólafur grew up and, when age allowed, he fished on Lake Winnipeg. After waiting 40 years, he moved to Vancouver where he worked as a carpenter. Margrét was the daughter of Bjarni Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Benediktsdóttir from Gafli in Víðidal. Margrét came with them to the West in 1912.
