Rósa, the daughter of Marteinn Guðlaugsson and Sigríður Guðmundsdóttir, came west in 1882. Jón came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873. A year later, he moved to Nebraska and took land there. They moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905 and settled in the Wynyard community.
