Sigfús came west in 1882 with his parents, Sigfús Jónasson Bergamann and Þórunn Jónsdóttir, pioneers in N. Dakota. Anna came west with her parents, Bjarni Olgeirsson and Guðrún Ásmundsdóttir, who lived in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Sigfús and Anna began farming in N. Dakota, moved from there to the town of Warrington, Oregon shortly after the turn of the century and lived there for two years. In 1905, they moved west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and settled between the Quill Lakes. There they tried farming for a few years, but moved in 1909 to Wynyard where Sigfús opened a shop. In the following years, Sigfús became interested in spiritual medicine, studied theology in Wisconsin, and planned to practice medicine in the Lakes Settlement, but it did not work because laws in the province forbade it. He then moved to Winnipeg where he tried, but from there he headed west to Washington, where he lived until his death.
