Jóhann came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and lived in Kinmount the first winter. They moved to New Iceland a year later and took land in the Víðirnes Settlement south of Gimli and named the land Bólstað. They lived there 27 years then moved on a different location in 1903, took land west of Bólstaður and named it Breiðabólstað.
