Sigurbjörg came west to Canada in 1874 with her parents, Benedikt Ólafsson and Hólmfríður Bjarnadóttir. Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Jón Pétursson and Ingunn Ólafsdóttir, in 1876. They settled in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland where they lived until 1880. They were in Winnipeg until the spring of 1881 when they moved to the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota. Jón and Sigurbjörg married there and began farming. They moved west to Calgary, Alberta in 1888 but took land in Markerville where they lived until 1903. They moved from there to Edmonton, which was undergoing extensive development, and Jón entered the real estate business. He prospered in the following years.
