They emigrated to America in 1873 and went directly to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They went west to Stoughton where they lived for a year, and where Jón worked with Norwegian farmers. They moved to the Icelandic community in Shawano County, Wisconsin in the fall of 1874 and lived there until 1880. They moved west to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota where they remained.
