Skúli Guðmundsson was born in Manitoba on October 20, 1877. He died in Poplar, Montana on April 1, 1945.

Skúli was the son of Guðmundur Skúlason and Guðríður Guðmundsdóttir, early settlers in the Víkur settlement in N. Dakota. He pursued a long-term education and graduated with a law degree from North Dakota State University. After graduation, he worked in partnership with his brother, Bárði in Grand Forks, but later opened his own office in Missoula, Montana. He was twice elected to the Montana Legislature. Edith Johnson was the daughter of Martin Nelson, a U.S. Congressman and later a Senator for North Dakota.
