Stefán Þorsteinsson was born on August 8, 1858 in Fljótsdal in N. Múlasýsla. He died on November 10, 1933 in Fargo, N. Dakota. He took the name Stephan T. Johnson in the west.

Stefán came west alone to Minnesota in 1882 and settled in Lyon County. He lived in Marshall in the Census of 1900 but then moved to Fargo where his family lived. There Stefán worked for a window manufacturer. Stefán was considered a very easy-going man and readily adapted to American society. Anna Sigríður had come west in 1880.
