Thor’s parents were Juren Victor Leifson and Mary Bradford. Juren was the son of Sigurður Þorleifsson and Hjálmfríður Hjálmarsdóttir in Spanish Fork. He completed his elementary education in Spanish Fork and a BA from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in 1955, and became a teacher at a high school in Utah the same year. He was a long-time chairman of the Icelandic Association of Utah.
