Þorbjörg emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with her mother, Sigríður Árnadóttir, and her husband, Gísli Jónsson. She married Magnús in Winnipeg in 1883 and they moved to Árnes in 1885. A West Icelandic source says that Magnús stopped farming six years later and lived with his son Þorkel for the rest of his life. The marriage probably broke up.
