Þorsteinn Jónsson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1847. He sometimes used the name Foster Johnson in the west.
Spouse: Friðbjörg Guðlaugsdóttir b. 1849 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla, d. January 6, 1924
Children: 1. Rósa b. 1872 2. Henry b. 1876 in Millbrook, Ontario 3. Lilja b. 1877 in Millbrook, Ontario.
They emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and spent the first winter in Kinmount, but in the spring of 1875 they moved to Millbrook east of Toronto. They stayed there for two years, but moved to Winnipeg in the spring of 1877 where they lived through the summer. They landed in New Iceland where they lived for two years, but gave up on the community, moving back to Winnipeg in the spring of 1879, where they prepared to move to N. Dakota. That fall that they moved to Pembina and stayed there until the spring of 1880, when they moved close to the village of Glasston, about 30 km southwest of Pembina. They lived there until 1903, when they moved to the town of Cavalier, where they had planned to live permanently. Due to health problems, Þorsteinn chose to move again, this time to Colorado. The climate agreed with him and they were successful. Their daughter Lilja, a married woman in Los Angeles, California, suggested that they move there, which they did in 1917.
