Þorsteinn, along with his father and brothers, emigtated West to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 from Gautlönd. This placename explaines his name, Þorsteinn Gauti. They homesteaded in the Lundar Settlement. Þorsteinn moved from there to a place Southeast suðaustur of Winnipeg, called Sandilands. There he lived until 1906, when he moved to Saskatchewan. He and Áslaug moved from there to Pembina Where they bought a small house just outside the village. In 1914 they moved to lakes area in Saskatchewan where Þorsteinn was a dairy farmer. Their last move in 1940 was to the Wynyard town.
