Tryggvi Jóhannes Guðmundsson was born on September 17, 1865 in Flateyjardal in S. Þingeyjarsýsla. He died in Duluth on August 1, 1917.

Tryggvi moved from Grímsnes in Grýtubakkahreppur west across the sea 1889, sailing on the Magnetic from Akureyri. A large group from the county went west that year and with a destination of Winnipeg, Manitoba according to their passports. In Vesturfaraskrá, everyone is listed who took the Magnetic from Akureyri in 1889, except Tryggvi. Ólafur Þorgeirsson’s Almanak in Winnipeg describes his death in 1918 p. 123 of the deceased in August, 1917 in this manner: “1. Tryggvi Guðmundsson, in Duluth; from Brettingsstaðir in Flateyjardalur in Þingeyjarsýsla; 50 years”. This is remarkable because no sources in Minnesota ever mention Tryggvi by name!
