In 1881, Vilhjálmur moved south to the Thingvalla settlement in N. Dakota with his parents, Jóhann Stefánsson and Ingibjörg Jóhannesdóttir, and he grew up there. He completed primary school in the community and pursued further education at universities in Grand Forks and Iowa. He studied anthropology at Harvard University from 1904-1906.
